Education is the cornerstone of individual and community success. But with more than 1.2 million children dropping out each year, America faces an education crisis. The cost is enormous. These trends are reversible, but only when communities and public, private and nonprofit sectors work together.
Our Goal:
In the area of education, our local goal is that all high schools will maintain a minimum graduation rate of 90% by 2018. We understand that to impact high school graduation, United Way must support children all along the learning spectrum brom birth through ready for career, college or trade.
The majority of United Way's funded programs are geared to increase academic achievement especially for children from lower income households, children in foster care and those whose support system at home may be less stable. Several of the programs serve school-aged children in the after-school hours, five days a week, and extend services into the summer months.
The eight education programs provided by our collaborative partners serve approximately 5,200 children annually. Several of the programs (Family Services and YMCA) have family components as well which deliver services to families whose children are directly impacted.
