United Way of Madison County and The Huntsville Times united during the 2011 Holiday Season for the 14th year to match "HOLIDAY WISHES" with generous donors to "MAKE WISHES COME TRUE".

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2011 Holiday Wishes program. The community came together and was able to provide cash donations, gift cards, furniture, clothing, kitchen supplies, and computers to make the Holiday Season a little brighter for their neighbors. Each family was able to receive something through the program. Most wishes were completely adopted and the remaining were partially adopted.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the following Businesses and Individuals for their donations!

  • Best Buy
  • Christmas Charities Year Round
  • Deborah Kromis
  • Huntsville Marriot
  • Joann Courtland
  • Julie & Matt Cowan

  • and ALL THE ANONYMOUS DONORS!

Holiday Wishes focuses on Madison County residents who have experienced a life emergency in recent months.  It may be a single mom facing a crisis who is unable to pay for both utilities and medicine this month, or a student who is in need of a computer for school whose parent was just laid off from work.

"Holiday Wishes is a program that helps local residents with their most pressing needs during the holiday season.  Many of these needs cannot be met through the established programs in the community.  Each year I am amazed by the outpouring of goodwill from The Huntsville Times readers who are able to fulfill the Wishes.  United Way is pleased to continue or collaborative partnership with The Huntsville Times in uniting wishers with donors and looks forward to also partnering with Christmas Charities Year Round and the Catholic Center of Concern, enabling even more people to receive help this holiday season." -Steve Kirkpatrick, President and CPO

During the month of October, each participant is asked to write a letter to the Holiday Wishes Volunteer Committe describing their situtations and identifying their unmet needs. The letters are reviewed by a panel of volunteers, then at the end of November, 40 Holiday Wish letters selected by the panel are published in The Times, allowing United Way of Madison County to unite the donors and those in need.  The Times will also runs follow-up stories, reporting on the overwhelming community response that is always seen from readers.  Individuals whose wishes are chosen for publication are contacted by United Way of Madison County and as wishes are adopted by generous readers, individuals are also notified how to pick up the fulfilled wish.

United Way of Madison County and The Huntsville Times ask readers for gifts of requested items, cash, time and/or services (i.e. plumbing, roof repair, dental work, etc.).  United Way has partnered with Christmas Charities Year Round, where donors can drop off any large appliance donations, such as washers/dryers/etc, that are unable to be stored at United Way.  All gifts are tax deductible through United Way of Madison County.

To whom it may concern:

My holiday wish is for me and my four children. There are ages 2,5,15 and 17. I’m a single mom working part-time. I have been looking for a full-time job for seven months. No luck. My husband has been incarcerated for 7 months and will be gone for a long time. I am doing the best I can, taking care of four children and trying to pay all the bills. I’m going threw alot of emotional stress, counseling for me and my children. My life has totally change being a single mom. My wish for myself is that I get help on my mortgage which is $900.00 per month. Because of my hardship I have put my house up for sale. I don’t want a forclosure because it will make my credit bad. So I have to pay monthly mortgage until it is sold. I wish for my 17 and 15 year old kids to get a laptop for school. My two year old girl is in need of pull-ups and wipes, and learning toys. My five year old son is in need of school uniforms, and wants learning toys. If my house does not sale by February, my four children and I may have to move in with my mother. She does foster care, so she doesn’t have a lot of space, but she has a big heart. Everything is possible with God. Thank you.

United Way,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to make a request for a Christmas wish. Due to drugs, alcohol, and just plain selfishness my husband decided to abandon his family. I am 9 months pregnant with 3 other children ages 16, 7, and 2. Due to a high risk pregnancy and a diabetes diagnosis I have been unemployed since March. My husband is on disability, but his check is what paid the bills in our house hold. My rent is $750.00 a month and that is what I am requesting today. My landlord is doing all he possibly can do to work with me. I have received all the charity I can possibly get from local agencies and churches. Soon my kids and I will be declared homeless. You have shown me such generosity over the years and a tremendous expression of love, not to mention the smiles you have put on many faces. When I think of United Way, I think of hands reaching out to help those in need. I never thought I would be crying out. Thank you for taking the time to read my request and God Bless.

Well that time of the year is comming up again. Same worries & same problems with my brother-in-law. The kids are in school the little girl is an A-B honor roll student the boy just turned 18. The father and mother are still on drugs & drinking. They are about as much help as a broken leg. It breaks my heart to watch these children go through this. I came up with a father that was drunk but I had a wonderful mom and grandparents. I’m trying to make there life as good as I can. I know you get alot of letters from a lot of people asking for alot of help and I wish them well. If I could get some help with my rent and light bill I could by a nice dinner for the kids for Christmas. I need help with my utilities. I have recently lost my job and have a 3 year old daughter. I am also 3 months pregnant. I need help with rent as well. I would like assistance with gas cards so I can get around to find a new job. I have no income right now and have applied for food stamps. My utilities have been cut off, so my daughter and I are living in our home without power. I’ve never had to ask anyone to help before, so this is very difficult for me to share my story.

United Way Christmas Wishes

I have never written in for Christmas wishes this year. I have some needs in my life to submit my situation and wishes. I have a college degree recently from UAH and not working in my field due to lack of positions. From July 2010 I have been living working on partial unemployment due to various reasons including the April tornadoes. I have had income losses; waiting weeks from unemployment you can’t recover. I’m short always an event to cause continual shortage of income to pay rent, bills, anything. I have exhaustedly applied, faxed, mailed resumes for various fields of education and job experience I have worked in past years. I have even trusted for job faxing resumes with few dollars of food money to no avail. Primarily I am need of a solid job in professional areas. I am experienced, educated in ideally t.v. production field. I would work to wait for position to open up with adequate income to get me current and have money for basic needs as I wait for an opening in the t.v. production field. I’ve had random bouts of illness, stomach flu, sinus infections all problems to cause more spending for medicine etc which sets me back further. What I ask for as wishes are: I have gone to my church and various people for help to no avail. Several apts were broken into a few years ago in my instance everything I had that was designed with metal was broken, dismantled bent. Cushioned folding card table chair my former priest had given me needs replaced. I have nothing to sit on at my desk or use at end of my love seat bed for my legs at night. Equal importance as they are in shreds, a pair of white canvas Champion style Keds 9M. I’ve tried for three years to save $ for these always get to used for gas or loss. Gift card for Kmart/Walmart, bath towel, slippers with a back on them- terri cloth style size 8-9, and an oil change for my car. As to my monthly bills my 2 jobs do not cover these expenses. I am months behind and fall short on rent every month and the lost income from tornadoes cannot be recovered. It is a daily plight of coming up short for gas, bills, paper items, etc. any help for rent and the wish list would be beyond a blessing and a relief to the struggle. Thank you for caring to want to read my request.

Dear United Way,

In Dec. 2010 the pipes burst in my home causing my utility bill to go up to $1,175.00. I had to replace the pipes. I am on disability and was current up until then. I began paying on the large bill and then the storms came. After the storms the lights went off, messed up some electrical issues, and the bill was due. My brother who was living with me up and left me with the bill taking his furniture and other household items. In May I was hospitalized at H’ville Hospital due to chronic depression. The breakdown was due to losing my best friend & brother in the storm. I was there for 7-8 days. From that point I was homeless until 10/26/2011 when Community Action helped me get my lights back on. I wish that I could get some good shoes with support- 10 ½ mens, a electric stove so I can cook, a mattress and bed. My current mattress is probably older than I am. I was hit by car and I have rods and pins so I am in constant chronic pain. I have medications that I need that I cannot afford. I live with my fiancé who is strong and helps me so much. She is a breast cancer survivor of 3 years.  She would love a pair of 9 ½ wide women- Tennis shoes or slip on flats. We would use assistance with gas as well as we get back on our feet as well as furniture for our living room.

United Way, I am a single mother with 2 small children. One in Elementary school and one in headstart. I’m a struggling mother with no job. I am in school to become a nurse. I have no income, and my bills are getting behind. I would like for my kids to have a nice Christmas being that this is the first year that I haven’t been able to provide for them. I have been searching high and low for a job but nothing has come through yet. It’s really hard! My kids would like a computer/laptop so they can do their school projects and reading activities. They like books and learning games. My boys play sports so they like basketballs and footballs. One of my kids is sleeping in a worn down bed. He really need a bed w/ mattress and box springs. I really need help this year, if I didn’t I wouldn’t be asking. Out of their whole lives I never needed any outside assistance but it has really been a rough year for me.

To Whom it may Concern,

I am married with one minor child age 15. I don’t ask for help but this year has been really really rough for our family.  My husband has cancer and has had it for 4 years. It started as colon rectal moved to his liver then went to his lungs and then to his brain. So by the time we pay bills buy medication try to buy food and gas for 3 or 4 Doctor apointments a week our finances are depleted. We are both disabled we only make 2300 a month so anything extra is out of the question. If at all possible if you could help us pay bills to free up a stressful situation it would be so appreciated. I cant even afford gifts for our daughter even though she is 15 and will be 16 soon, she also has an amazing amount of stress knowing her father is deathly ill. She tries not to ask for anything and it breaks my heart knowing she wants and needs things I cannot give her. Thank you.

I’ve never had a computer and need one despartely now, to assist and keep up with my young, hearing impaired adopted daughter, who is falling a little behind her classmaters without the resource of a computer at home. It would make enormous contribution to my young daughter’s education and social life. I’ve suffered much heart ache and personal tragdedy with the loss of two husbands, my home burned down, and my young grandson was shot and killed in 2010 in Madison, AL. I’m on disability so my income is very limited. Blessing me with the opportunity of receiving a computer would not only benefit and improve my daughter’s most precious learning years, but would allow me to electronically communicate with the Social Security Administration, Food Stamp offices, and the Medicare office. Lastly this computer complete with a possible video camera, would be a historical way to preserve my you  four year old daughter’s memories of her with me as my earthly time with her comes to closures. I am a single mother of three children, all boys. Reading through the Sunday paper I notice the add and decided to write a letter requesting the needs of my family. Like all other familys in need but what set me aside from all the rest is the opportunity to set pride aside and ask for help and not let my children go lacking because of my pride and ashame. My boys and I move here with nothing. I didn’t know what to do, several times I just wanted to leave them at the hospital and go because I felt that I was worthless, not able to provide for them and when holidays come around I will really feel more vulnable to doing this. Last Christmas we didn’t have a X’mas we was staying in the Salvation Army. We was there until August 2011 until I got a job. I am working only 2 days a week and is hard making ends meet with my rent and utilities bills but with God’s grace and mercy renewed everyday helps me know that I can and is able to take care of my kids and be the mother I need to be. Please can someone help me give my kids a smile on their face and let them know that its okay to ask Santa for a few things. My 14 and 13 year old would like a laptop to help with their school work and my 4 year old would like some hot wheel cars and books so his brothers and I can read to him.

Dear Holiday Wishes, I am so delighted that United Way is going to help families again this year. I am requesting assistance because of my current economic situation. I have been thru a lot this year the passing of my grandmother whom was so dear to me and my babies. She helped me out a lot. But she is in a better place now with Jesus Christ. I am a single mom with twin baby girls. I lost my job due to business wasn’t doing good. So I’m asking for some help this year to help me get caught up on my rent behind $800 and help with my utilities. Also a gas card would come in hand so I can continue to look for work. Some pull-ups and baby wipes would also help me out. This would be a dream come true if someone could find it in their heart to help me and my family out this Christmas. So I would like to say thank you so much in advance. Sincerely Single Mother of Twins

I am a homeless widow living at the Salvation Army Shelter. I have been living there since January 2011. Before I moved to the shelter I lived at the Downtown Rescue Mission. My husband died on April 1, 1998. I lived in a trailer in Gurley and worked. I was so depressed over his death that I drank and did drugs. Eventually I moved to an apartment complex. Because of my addictions I had no money to pay the rent and was evicted. I was taken to court and the judge told me to pay the money that I owe to the Apts. After that is when I began living homeless and in shelters. As of today I no longer abuse alcohol or use drugs and have been clean for 2 years and 10 months. I am taking GED classes hoping that I can get my GED and find work. I am willing to work any hours of the day but cannot find work without my GED and some form of transportation to get to work. I was informed about your Wish program by my Social Worker at Mental Health. I am so tired of being homeless  but before I can get into housing I have got to paid the apartment complex off and the bill is $340. 96 if you could please help. At this time, on my behalf, all I am asking is that you consider paying the apartment complex the money that I owe. Thank you for your kind consideration.

Dear United Way,

I am a 32 year old, single mother of four amazingly beautiful girls, ranging in the ages of: 17, 14, 12 & 10.  In the month of July, my hours at work were dramatically cut & by the grace of God, we were able to maintain our living expenses.  I put all of my faith in God, while we as a family, patiently endured that my hours would be restored.  As of 10/24/11, I have witnessed the manifestation of that come to pass, & for that I am very thankful.  My holiday wish is to see my girl’s healthy wishes come true, my girls are my life’s best reward.  They have had to endure many things throughout this past year.  So, I’m asking you for some financial assistance on paying off some bills so that in return I’ll have some extra cash to make four beautiful girl’s wishes come true.  Thank you for considering me & my family in your Holiday Wishes.

Dear Holiday Wishes,

It is hard for me to write this letter asking for help for this Christmas season because usually I give to everyone for all seasons. I recently got laid off from my job of 24 years and my job ended because of the base realignment, I was not offered a job replacement so currently I am still out of work and going through a financial hardship and that’s my reason for this wish list. I keep my faith from day to day and through all the hard times God is still good. If its possible if allowed I can use help to pay mortgage and utilities. In requesting assistance when I get back to work I will gladly give back to help future recipients or families in need. If no help could be provided to me and my family at this time still I will give back when I get a job.

Dear Holiday Wishes, I have a dear friend who desperately needs help in her family. She has Rheumatoid Arthritis in the last stages. She has cataracts in her right eye which is taking her eyesight. She is trying to help take care of her grandchildren but is unable physically to drive because of her cataracts. She has no insurance and no means of paying for any procedures. Everyone needs a helping hand sometimes in their lives. She is a well deserving person who is in desperate need of assistance. Thank you.

Dear Holiday Wishes,

My daughter is a single parent after her husband of 8 years walked out on her and his family. My daughter was pregnant and he didn’t want another child. She refused to get rid of the baby and he refused to stay with her and handle his responsibilities as a man. My daughter is going through a great hardship. So were reaching out to you and pray you can help my daughter and her children.

Dear United Way, I am seventy-three year old disabled widow. During my lifetime I have been hit by four cars and dragged by three of those cars. I am presently the primary care taker of my 53 year old son who suffered a Hemorrhaging Stroke in his brain in 2007. He cant do anything for himself and is bedridden. I also have a Lung disease called Sarcardosis which was acquired during my last accident. The carpet in my home is over 40 years old, has deep rooted dirt in it, and is filled with mold. Because of the condition of the house and carpet, it is making us sick. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to replace it with new carpet, therefore I am requesting your assistance in reaching out to companies who can remove the old carpet and donate and install new carpet in our home. Your service will be greatly appreciative

Dear Holiday Wishes,

I moved to Huntsville under the assumption that I had this job that would solve all my problem for me and my three children I stayed in Montevallo so it would take me 2 and a half hours to drive just one way to Huntsville for these interviews which I had three. Just to make a long story short they wouldn’t give me the job so I’m here with my 3 children and just got a part time job. My son has a speech problem and the dentist says that he has beautiful teeth by will need braces and a head piece so that others may understand him. I really do thank you for this opportunity.

Dear Holiday Wishes,

I am 53 year old grandmother who is taking care of her 11 year old granddaughter, who has lived with me since birth. I’m working part time and have no medical insurance. I see lots of doctors and have a lot of test done that I am responsible to pay. I am behind in every payment. I struggle monthly to pay for our household bills. Trying to get another job has been difficult because of medical issues. It would be such a blessing to me to be able to get me to be able to get my granddaughter a laptop for her school work and some living room furniture. Could you please make a wish come true for me and my granddaughter?

To whom this my concern,

I am writing to the United Way. My name is (with held) and I am a certified nurse assistant. I lost my job a few months ago due to a family emergency. I have been looking for a job for three months with no progress. I am writing to see if I can get some help for Christmas for my five children cause due to me losing my job I lost my home and transportation too. Me and my kids are living with a friend until I can get on my feet. I really want my kids to be happy again.

My name is (with held) and I would like to see if I qualify for this Holiday Wish program which is great for persons in my situation or any bad situation for that matter. I want to start by saying in 2006 is when my life came to a complete hault,at least it’s what I made of it. I was diagnosed with an illness that I thought would literally end my life right then and there. I mean for 2 years I had no job, no where to live, living from house to house because no one wanted me around because of my illness, so I drank every day, stressing out, just tearing my temple down, but GOD came through in 2008. I found a job that last 3 years. I am thankful for that 2 yr trial because it changed me and made me a better person. I even went and enrolled myself in Virginia College as a Medical Assistant that I completed in July 2011. I had given up on getting pregnant due to my illness and close to the end of school I found out I was pregnant. He is a 7 month old healthy boy and I love him to death! The man that I was taking care of died in July so that left me jobless. If I get chose for this Holiday Wish, would help catch up my bills and my baby can have a wonderful Christmas. Desperate times calls for desperate measures and this is one time that I need some help and to be pulled out of this rump; so if its possible please see that I’m sincere, and love my son and want the best for him. I’m going to close this letter by saying thank you, and may god bless everyone that even thought a program like this and that willing to help poor people.

*NANA’S WISH*

Dear: To Whom It May Concern! My wish isn’t for material things, my wish is that my grandson is able to become a regular part of my life, and Id like to give him a presant for Christmas! Ive been praying for 2 years that God will open that for us. I raised my grandson  from day one untill he turned 2, and then my daughter came and took him away, and I havent seen him since. My daughter and me dont see eye-to eye on most things, but I am still want to be a part of my grandsons life. Even if he doesnt remember me since he was so young when she took him away. Im praying for a (SECOND CHANCE) with my little grandson. I know this is a big one, a big wish I mean, and my faith tells me that only God can fix it. Please help me pray for this-In Jesus name Amen.

Love Nana

I am writing this letter asking for your help this holiday season. I am a single mother of  (4) whose sole prayer is that ALL my children would grow, and prosper, and be a productive member of society. One of my greatest obstacles has been obtaining useage of a computer for my children to be able to complete homework assignments, use study tools found on-line, reports or papers that have to be done. In August of this year my middle daughter was diagnosed with arachnoid cysts on her brain which for me meant less hours at work. I have (2) other daughters, one of whom is a senior  and will be graduating in the spring of 2012! My son will be returning to Calhoun College in the spring to complete his classes. As you can see there is a great need for access to a computer and your assistance will be greatly, greatly appreciated. May God bless you.

To whom it may concern, To be honest I’ve never been in a situation like this before. I try to do what is write and good but it doesn’t seem to be good enough. I worked my whole life and now I’m unemployed. For some reason I can’t find work and I don’t know why. I have spent the last year taking care of my disabled mother so I have no source of income except $190.00 in welfare. I have no help with caring for my mom so I really have no options anymore. The reason for this letter is to ask for help. I have a 14 year old daughter and I would love for her to have a Christmas this year. It’s very hard for her now because of my lack of income and the fact that we have to live in a house with 8 other people. I want to do for her myself but I can’t. I am at a point in my life where I can’t even fix my truck or keep gas in it for that matter. I don’t know what to do anymore and I’m tired of begging for help. This is my last time so please help me for my daughter’s sake. I don’t know what else to do and her father won’t help. All I ask for my daughter is a computer to help her in school. Thank you.

I am a single parent of 2 children one boy age 14 and 1 girl age 12. I am a full time college student and my school money just didn’t go as far as it should have. Because I had 2 unexpected bills come up last month that came to nearly $3,000 and I went through a divorce this past year. And since he filed in Wisconsin, so I had to have a lawyer with a Wisconsin State License and that was costly so I’m asking for Rent Money $630.00 for December and January and Electric for both of those months and Gas Cards for my car for school. God bless.

I am a single mother with 3 children. I have a 12 year old, 7 year old, and 6 year old. They need a labtop to do their school work and a printer to print off their project reports. I am working, but my income is only enough to pay my bills every month. I barely have enough gas money to get back and forth to work and to take them to the tutoring school. I got sick back in June and July so I didn’t have any income coming in at that time so it put me behind on my bills. I am still trying to catch up on them. My kids are doing really good in school so I’d like to get them something special.
